I always contrast Classic Change Management with what I call Nimble Change Leadership™.

As I explained in the previous episode, organizations across sectors are moving away from the former to embrace the latter.

To highlight the key differences, let’s look at the phrases…

In both cases, the word CHANGE is at the centre. That is because the objective is the same: adaptation.

Now let’s get to the differences… First, CLASSIC vs. NIMBLE.

CLASSIC rhymes with lethargic, which is another word for SLUGGISH.

Classic Change Management is indeed sluggish – and that is by design. Why? Because it comes from an era when the pace of change was slow; the dust had time to settle.

As a result, it feels like playing a game of golf. For example, working from phase to phase – the way golfers progress from hole to hole.

Today’s nature of change is fundamentally different: fast-paced, ongoing, and disruptive. No luxury of time whatsoever!

In the new normal, we must adapt as if playing a game of basketball: moving at pace, adjusting on the go, with fluidity. In other words, by being super NIMBLE.

Finally, MANAGEMENT vs. LEADERSHIP.

Classic Change Management focusses heavily on managing… Managing what? The process of change.

In today’s BANI world, the main challenge for change-makers is NOT process management. It is leading people through change.

So here you go: Classic Change Management vs. Nimble Change Leadership™

Stay tuned for the next episode of the #NimbleVlog…
